Minneapolis Beach

Minneapolis Beach extends along the Columbia River in north-central Washington State, about 180 kilometers east of Seattle. This stretch of riverbank belongs to an area where the river, after crossing the Cascades, widens into a succession of reservoirs and freer sections. The surrounding landscape mixes basalt cliffs, geological formations typical of the Columbia Plateau, and ponderosa pine forests. Road access remains limited, giving this segment a discreet character compared to the major tourist developments in the region. The beach itself borders the river directly, offering direct access to its cold, often turbid waters. In the immediate vicinity, US-W Beach is located 3.1 kilometers downstream, while several designated swimming areas punctuate the river course in the vicinity (US-W Swim at 4 km, 4.2 km, and 5.1 km). Minneapolis Beach retains the character of an undeveloped site, frequented by fishermen and river recreation enthusiasts rather than a mass swimming clientele. The absence of supervision and structured facilities reinforces this wild riverbank atmosphere, where visitors must assess safety conditions themselves. No official facilities are reported on site: no toilets, showers, dedicated parking, or dining. Access remains free but without amenities. The site does not have Blue Flag status. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The policy regarding dogs is not documented. Visitors are advised to check with local Douglas County authorities for seasonal conditions and river water levels before their visit.

About this spot

Minneapolis Beach is named after the small community of Minneapolis, established in the early 20th century in this region of the Columbia Basin. The river, which shapes the entire geological landscape of the Columbia Plateau, carved its gorges through ancient basalt lava flows dating back millions of years. This river beach is one of the many historical access points used by salmon fishermen and river transporters. Although little documented in modern tourist guides, it remains a landmark for local residents and fly-fishing enthusiasts who know the secrets of the Columbia in this sector.
