Playa Conejo

Playa Conejo stretches along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Puntarenas, a few kilometers southwest of Jaco. This portion of the coastline is characterized by a succession of coves and black volcanic sand beaches, typical of this region where the Central Cordillera plunges towards the Pacific Ocean. The shore, exposed to swells from the open sea, benefits from a coastal dynamic marked by tides and currents that regularly shape the banks. The beach itself is part of a cluster of nearby seaside spots: Playa Faro Escondido is only 500 meters to the north, while Playa Matapalo extends 800 meters to the south. Unlike these often more frequented neighbors, Playa Conejo retains a more discreet character, bordered by dense coastal vegetation where palm trees and tropical shrubs create an atmosphere of relative tranquility. The black sand, of volcanic origin, warms quickly under the equatorial sun and visually contrasts with the turquoise waters of the Pacific. Access is generally on foot from the coastal paths connecting the neighboring beaches. No supervised swimming facilities are present on site. The absence of formal amenities – toilets, showers, or restaurant services – makes it a place where visitor autonomy is paramount. Access for people with reduced mobility is not facilitated. This beach remains non-Blue Flag certified and has no official lifeguard service, a common characteristic of the small coves in the area.

About this spot

The name "Conejo" – rabbit in Spanish – could refer to the small size of this cove or a forgotten local anecdote. Located in the transition zone between the volcanic lands of the interior and the Pacific, this stretch of coastline testifies to Costa Rica's dynamic geology, where tectonic plates have shaped rugged coastal landscapes. The area, historically less developed than neighboring Jaco, has retained a certain authenticity, attracting mainly travelers seeking coastal routes less marked than conventional tourist circuits.
