Spiagia della Sciabichedda

The Spiaggia della Sciabichedda stretches along the Tyrrhenian coast of Campania, in the province of Salerno, a few kilometers south of Paestum. This portion of the Campanian coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and fine sandy beaches, framed by low limestone cliffs and sparse Mediterranean vegetation. The sea, deep blue in summer, has a gradual slope typical of this sector of the Gulf of Salerno, where rocky seabeds alternate with sandbanks. The beach itself offers a discreet setting, far from the standardized seaside infrastructure of neighboring resorts. In the immediate vicinity, Spiaggia di Marcellino o dei Francesi (0.6 km) is more frequented and better equipped, while Spiaggia della grotta dell'acqua (2.3 km) attracts those seeking remarkable geological formations. The site is directly exposed to southern winds, making swimming variable depending on the season. Access is via a small coastal path, and the sand, coarse in places, gradually gives way to smooth rocks towards the water. No lifeguard service or tourist facilities are present on site. The absence of Blue Flag status reflects the natural and undeveloped state of the place. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed due to the rugged terrain. The beach remains open to dogs, although the lack of infrastructure limits its appeal for visitors with pets.

About this spot

The name "Sciabichedda" comes from the local Campanian dialect, evoking a small cove or narrow bay—a direct reference to the fragmented coastal geography of this area. This zone, located on the outskirts of ancient Paestum, has long served as a refuge for local fishermen and smugglers during periods of Barbary piracy. According to local accounts, the beach also hosted clandestine shipbuilding yards in the 19th century, hence its historical association with minor maritime activity. Today, it remains a little-known passage between major tourist routes, preserving the authenticity of small Campanian beaches before seaside development.
