Plage de la Tortue

Located on the Var coast, between Saint-Raphaël and Fréjus, Plage de la Tortue is part of the cluster of small coves that characterize the Esterel region. Just 200 meters from Arène Grosse Beach and 600 meters from the urban center of Saint-Raphaël, this portion of the coastline benefits from a southeast exposure protected by the rocky massifs of the hinterland. The Mediterranean displays changing hues depending on the light, from deep blue to turquoise reflections in the late afternoon, while the coastline alternates between red porphyry outcrops and small sandy bays. Plage de la Tortue remains a discreet stop compared to its immediate neighbors. Where the nearby Arène Grosse Beach attracts swimmers seeking easy access, and where Saint-Raphaël 13 concentrates urban beach infrastructure, this beach cultivates a certain restraint. Its undeveloped character makes it a favored retreat for visitors wishing to escape the hustle and bustle without venturing as far as Agay, 4.7 kilometers away. Arrival is via a coastal path or a basic access ramp; fine sand gives way gradually to smooth pebbles as one approaches the water. No comfort facilities are reported on site. Swimming is practiced without official supervision, and access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. This absence of certification or service is not a handicap: it rather reflects the purpose of this segment of the Esterel coastline, where the proximity of Saint-Raphaël nevertheless guarantees access to shops and services within a few minutes' walk.

About this spot

The name 'Tortue' (Turtle) refers to the marine fauna that frequents these Mediterranean waters, although direct sightings remain rare. The Saint-Raphaël region was built in the 19th century around seaside tourism and the exploitation of red porphyry quarries that give the Esterel its distinctive geological identity. The beaches in this area, including this one, long served as embarkation points for workers and stone blocks destined for Mediterranean construction sites. Today, this spectacular geology—the ochre and crimson volcanic rocks—remains the main attraction, visible from every swim.
