Playa Estrella

Playa Estrella extends along the Caribbean coast of Panama, in the province of Bocas del Toro, a short distance from the archipelago of the same name. This part of the Panamanian coastline is characterized by a succession of fine sandy beaches bordered by dense tropical vegetation, where the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea lap sparsely populated shores. Access is mainly by boat from the neighboring islands, which preserves the relatively unspoiled character of this coastal sector. The beach itself offers a strip of fine white sand, typical of the Bocas archipelago islands. Backed by dense vegetation, it is part of a highly fragmented coastal area: Playa Carenero Noreste is 1.1 kilometers to the northeast, while Playa El Istmito and its immediate neighbors occupy the next 2.5 to 2.9 kilometers. The site offers direct access and a tranquil atmosphere, far from standardized seaside developments, with generally calm, translucent water suitable for swimming and marine observation. The site has no official supervision or structured facilities. The absence of formal tourist infrastructure means visitors must bring their own equipment and fresh water. Access is exclusively by sea, which naturally limits visitor numbers and excludes land motor vehicles. Swimming here remains an autonomous experience, without lifeguards or established commercial services.

About this spot

The name "Estrella" (star in Spanish) refers to the particularly abundant starfish in the shallow waters of this sector of Bocas del Toro, an archipelago discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 on his fourth voyage. These islands, initially inhabited by the Guaymí and Ngäbe-Buglé, have retained a strong indigenous identity despite colonization. In the early 20th century, banana cultivation transformed the archipelago into a regional economic center, attracting Caribbean workers and entrepreneurs. Today, beaches like Playa Estrella remain refuges where the marine ecosystem—corals, starfish, and tropical fish—persists relatively intact, recalling the ecological importance of these waters, which are little exploited by tourism.
