Plage Sidi Salem stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, near Annaba, in the northeast of the country. Located at approximately 36°51'N and 7°47'E, this beach is part of a coastline characterized by alternating sandy coves and rocky formations, where the Mediterranean meets a coast shaped by the region's geological history. The area, rich in Roman remains and ancient port traditions, retains the charm of a sparsely built Mediterranean coast, with backgrounds of hills and olive groves typical of the Algerian Tell. The beach itself offers an authentic character, far from standardized tourist developments. It is part of a chain of coastal beaches: Plage DZ is 2.7 km to the east, while another Plage DZ at 3.3 km and a third at 3.6 km mark the immediate coastline. This succession of small beaches reflects the natural fragmentation of the Annaba shoreline. The general atmosphere remains that of a working and local coastal area, where visitors mingle with fishermen and residents rather than organized crowds. Access to the water is without particular supervision, and tourist infrastructure remains minimal. No formalized services are documented on site: no lifeguard supervision, no accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and no Blue Flag status. The beach remains a little-known natural area, where visitors must organize themselves autonomously. Nearby, the Salinas de Bône (6.6 km away) testify to the historical importance of the region's marine resources and extractive activities.
Sidi Salem evokes one of the many Muslim saints venerated in North Algeria, whose sanctuaries dot the Mediterranean coastline. The Annaba region, ancient Roman Hippone, has long been a commercial and cultural crossroads; the surrounding beaches, including this one, have served as mooring and landing points since antiquity. During the French colonial period, the Annaba coastline gradually became urbanized, but some coves like this one retained a certain marginality, remaining frequented more by local fishermen than by mass tourism. This relative discretion makes it an area where the Mediterranean ambiance of before seaside standardization persists.
