Located in Staouali, about thirty kilometers west of Algiers, this beach is part of the Algerian Mediterranean coastline characterized by limestone cliffs and coves alternating with sandy stretches. The coast here is relatively accessible and benefits from direct southern exposure, offering natural protection against the prevailing northerly winds. The area concentrates several nearby beaches: Plage des Pins is only 100 meters away, while Plage CRF MDN and Plage DZ extend 1.1 kilometers respectively, forming a succession of access points to the coastline. The shore consists of fine, golden sand, typical of the Algiers beaches in this region. The atmosphere remains relatively calm compared to the more urbanized resorts of Algiers, with moderate crowds outside the summer periods. The beach retains an authentic coastal character, without the massive developments of neighboring tourist complexes, although its classification as a 'beach resort' indicates some structuring of the site. The Mediterranean waters have a pleasant temperature in summer, ranging between 24 and 27°C depending on the season. Access remains basic: no supervision service is provided on site. The absence of Blue Flag certification reflects the natural state of the beach, without formal environmental certification. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The area remains poorly equipped with standardized tourist infrastructure, preserving its undeveloped aspect compared to the more significant coastal developments located in the immediate vicinity.
The name 'Plage du Palmier' (Palm Tree Beach) (Shati' al-Nakhil in Arabic) evokes the Mediterranean vegetation that once bordered this Staouali coast. Staouali, a former Ottoman port that became a seaside resort, retains traces of a commercial history dating back to the Barbary Regencies. The Algiers coastal region has seen gradual tourist development since the 1960s, with the emergence of resort complexes aimed at the urban middle class of Algiers. This beach, though modest in its infrastructure, represents one of the many attempts to develop the Algerian coastline for domestic tourism, remaining true to its essentially local and family-oriented clientele, far from international circuits.
