Plage de Merlimont

Located on the coast of the English Channel in Pas-de-Calais, about 15 km south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Plage de Merlimont stretches along a coastline characterized by white chalk cliffs and coastal dunes. This stretch of the Norman-Picardy shore, exposed to the tides of the North Atlantic, benefits from a typical configuration of northern French beaches: a wide foreshore revealing expanses of hard sand and rich mudflats at low tide. Fine golden sand constitutes the surface of this beach, which is distinguished by its less urbanized character than its immediate neighbors. 0.6 km to the north is Plage GB, while 1.8 km to the south lies another Plage GB. Further on, at 4.5 km, Stella Plage marks a transition towards more equipped areas. Merlimont retains a rural beach atmosphere, with a hinterland dominated by wet meadows and small agricultural hamlets, offering a less saturated experience than the neighboring seaside resorts. No permanent facilities are reported here: no toilets, no designated parking, no showers. The beach has no official supervision and has not obtained the Blue Flag label. Access is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. This lack of tourist structuring makes it a site for autonomous visitors, particularly appreciated during off-peak periods and by walkers seeking a less crowded stretch of coastline.

About this spot

Merlimont derives its name from the medieval French "merlot" (little blackbird) and "mont," evoking the wooded hills that once characterized this sector of the Boulonnais. The region, historically linked to coastal fishing and agricultural exploitation of the hinterland lands, has retained this rural vocation despite the gradual urbanization of the Picardy coast. Unlike Boulogne or Étaples, Merlimont never experienced massive tourist development, which explains its maintenance in a semi-natural state. Shore fishermen still explore the areas exposed at low tide, perpetuating an ancestral practice continuously shaped by Atlantic storms and tidal cycles.
