Platja dels Canyerets (Santa Cristina d'Aro)

Platja dels Canyerets stretches along the Catalan Mediterranean coast near Santa Cristina d'Aro in the Selva comarca of Girona. Located approximately 40 kilometers north of Barcelona, this beach is part of a coastline defined by alternating rocky coves and small sandy beaches, characteristic of the Costa Brava. The shoreline here is less steep than in the more northern sections, offering a gradual transition between limestone formations and the sandy deposits that define this coastal region. The beach stands out for its understated character within a succession of small coastal shores. Platja des Bol Nou, 1.6 kilometers away, offers a similar configuration but attracts slightly more visitors, while Platja de sa Pedrera, at 2.4 kilometers, provides a comparable atmosphere with natural access from the interior. Upon arrival, visitors discover a minimally developed coastal space where proximity to Mediterranean vegetation creates an intimate setting. The absence of major tourist infrastructure preserves the site's authenticity, offering a swimming experience centered on direct engagement with the sea and coastal landscape. No basic facilities—toilets, showers, or parking—are available on site. The beach lacks Blue Flag status and has no lifeguard supervision. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. This minimal setup reflects its status as an undeveloped cove, suited to those seeking unmediated contact with the Mediterranean shoreline.

About this spot

The name "Canyerets" derives from the Catalan word "canya" (reed), evoking the wetland flora that once characterized the backshore areas of this region before 20th-century coastal development. Santa Cristina d'Aro, a town in the interior of Selva, long maintained its beaches as spaces for agriculture and artisanal fishing. Unlike the major Costa Brava resorts that developed from the 1960s onward, this sector has retained measured growth, allowing local coves to remain swimming destinations primarily frequented by residents and those familiar with the Catalan coast.
