Playa Esterillos Este

Playa Esterillos Este extends along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Puntarenas province, about 120 kilometers southwest of San José. This portion of the central Pacific Costa Rican coastline is characterized by a succession of black volcanic sand beaches, shaped by the currents of the Pacific Ocean and bordered in the background by dense tropical vegetation. The local bay offers direct exposure to offshore waves, typical of this region where marine conditions vary considerably depending on the season. The beach itself is distinguished by its less developed character compared to its immediate neighbors. 1.9 kilometers to the west is Esterillos, more frequented and with more established tourist infrastructure, while Playa Bejuco, located 2.9 kilometers to the south, attracts a similar clientele. Esterillos Este retains a quieter atmosphere, with less formalized access and reduced attendance. The black sand, inherited from the region's volcanic subsoil, creates a unique ambiance under the tropical sun, while the variable width of the beach according to the tides offers changing exploration possibilities throughout the day. The absence of official supervision and Blue Flag certification characterizes this section of the Costa Rican coastline, where beaches remain largely in their natural state. Visitors should anticipate the lack of standardized facilities and adapt to local conditions. Access to the beach depends on regional road infrastructure, with no specific documented amenities for people with reduced mobility.

About this spot

The name 'Esterillos' comes from colonial Spanish, designating barren or unproductive coastal lands. This region of central Costa Rica, formed by the ancient volcanic activity of the Talamanca mountain range, still bears traces of this geology in its distinctive black sand. Historically, these beaches served as landing points for artisanal fishermen and coastal traders long before modern tourism development. Today, Esterillos Este remains an area where this traditional economy coexists with low-density tourism, offering a glimpse of the less transformed Costa Rican Pacific coast.
