Playa de los Roques

Playa de los Roques extends along the northern coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, near Puerto de la Cruz, one of the archipelago's main seaside resorts. Located at 28.4°N and 16.5°W, this beach is part of the island's characteristic volcanic coastline, where black lava cliffs border narrow coves and shallow bays. The Atlantic Ocean here has a deep hue, often agitated by the trade winds that sweep this northern part of Tenerife. The surrounding coastal landscape alternates between raw rock formations and small pocket beaches, typical of this region where volcanic geology prevails over sandy deposits. The beach consists entirely of pebbles, an uncommon surface in the Canaries but characteristic of coastal areas where erosion of volcanic rocks is dominant. Unlike Playa de Puerto, 2.7 km away, which offers easier access, or Playa de San Telmo, 3 km away, more frequented by tourists, Playa de los Roques retains a more austere and less developed character. Gray and black pebbles cover the entire coastline, creating a mineral atmosphere where the sound of waves echoes against the stones. Direct exposure to Atlantic swells makes swimming conditions variable depending on the season, with periods when the water remains turbulent. No specialized facilities are present on site. The beach is not classified as Blue Flag and has neither supervision nor facilities for accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Access remains rudimentary, reflecting this cove's status as an undeveloped coastal area compared to the tourist facilities of Lago Martiánez, the water park located 3.4 km away.

About this spot

The name 'Roques' simply evokes the rock formations that dominate this sector of Tenerife's coastline. This stretch of coast, shaped by Pliocene and Quaternary volcanic eruptions, carries within it the raw geological history of the archipelago. Puerto de la Cruz, developed nearby in the 20th century as a commercial port and then a seaside resort, long left the surrounding coves away from mass tourism. Playa de los Roques thus remains a relic of that era, frequented mainly by locals and travelers seeking coastal authenticity away from the developed beaches of the region.
