Playa Ostional extends along the northwestern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Guanacaste province, about 50 kilometers south of Liberia. This portion of the coastline is part of a succession of beaches that characterize the Nicoya Peninsula, where wooded cliffs gradually descend to black volcanic sand coves. The area benefits from direct exposure to Pacific swells, particularly marked in the dry season, and remains relatively untouched by the intensive tourist urbanization that marks other parts of the country. The beach itself is distinguished by its wild character and limited accessibility compared to its immediate neighbors. Playa del Ostional, 0.8 kilometers away, offers a similar experience but is more frequented; Playa Rosario and Playa de Nosara, located 2.7 kilometers away respectively, attract a more established clientele due to their adjacent facilities. The shore here remains austere: gray-black sand, rocks emerging from the water, dense coastal vegetation. Powerful waves and lateral currents require increased caution from visitors, while the absence of crowds reinforces the impression of isolation. No basic facilities are present on site. The beach is not Blue Flag certified and has neither supervision nor accessibility facilities for motor mobility. Access is exclusively via dirt track or coastal path from neighboring beaches, which preserves its undeveloped character and reserves it for visitors with appropriate transportation or those willing to hike.
The name 'Ostional' derives from the colonial Spanish 'ostión,' meaning pearl oyster. The Guanacaste coastal region, formerly an isolated province of Costa Rica, retains this marine toponymy inherited from the era of Spanish trading posts. Playa Ostional remains famous among naturalists for its 'arribadas'—phenomena of massive emergence of olive ridley and leatherback turtles that come to lay their eggs by the thousands during new moon nights, particularly between July and December. These events, documented since the 19th century, make this coast a living laboratory of marine ecology. Although poorly developed, the beach attracts ornithologists and marine biologists who come to observe these reproductive rituals, making the site a discreet scientific destination.
