Praia de Bens

Praia de Bens stretches along the coast of northern Galicia, Spain, in the region of Noia. Located about 80 kilometers southwest of Santiago de Compostela, this beach borders the Ulla estuary, where the waters of the North Atlantic penetrate deep into the Galician lands. The surrounding coastline is characterized by a succession of small sandy coves and rocky headlands, typical of the Ría de Arousa, with pine forests descending to the coastline and fishing villages scattered along the bay. The beach itself features fine golden sand, exposed to Atlantic influences but protected by the geography of the ría. Unlike Praia de San Roque-Cetaria, located 3.4 kilometers to the east and more frequented in the summer season, Bens retains a quieter, less developed character. In the immediate vicinity, Praia do Matadoiro (4.6 km) offers a more exposed rocky alternative, while the entire area forms a string of beaches accessible on foot or by car depending on the tides and seasons. The site remains sparsely populated, with direct access from small coastal paths and an atmosphere of a largely preserved coastline. Access to the beach is free and unrestricted. No surveillance or equipment infrastructure is reported. The site does not have the Blue Flag designation. The absence of specific facilities makes it a place for independent swimming, suitable for visitors seeking a coastal experience without immediate commercial services.

About this spot

Bens derives its name from the old Galician word 'ben,' meaning 'good' or 'source,' likely a reference to the small streams that feed the ría. This coastal area, shaped by the tides of the North Atlantic and riverine inputs, has long served as a mooring point for local fishing boats. Until the 1980s, the beaches of this ría were areas for work as well as leisure, where nets dried on the sand and fishermen's wives processed catches. Even today, despite the decline of artisanal fishing, the surrounding villages retain this maritime memory, and Bens remains a beach where one encounters more locals than organized tourists.
