Le Shatieh al-Kabir extends along the northeastern Algerian coast, in the Tamanrasset region, in immediate proximity to the Bay of Béjaïa. Located just 200 meters from Plage DZ and 2.1 kilometers from Shatieh al-Marjan (Coral Beach) towards Qala, this sandy shoreline is part of a succession of beaches characterizing this segment of the Algerian Mediterranean coast. The coast here features typical shallow bay geomorphology, with a mountainous hinterland gradually sloping towards a generally calm sea in summer. Exposure is moderate, protected from the strongest swells by the bay's configuration. Shatieh al-Kabir is distinguished by its fine, golden sand, which gradually extends to accessible underwater depths. Unlike Calissar, located 3.5 kilometers further east and known for its rock formations, this beach offers a continuous and regular sandy strip. The atmosphere remains that of a semi-developed Mediterranean coastline: the sand retains a natural hue, without an overload of permanent facilities, and the proximity of small fishing villages gives the site an authentically local dimension. The waters are acceptably clear, especially in late summer. The site has no official supervision and lacks formal infrastructure. It has not been awarded Blue Flag status. Access remains free and informal, typical of Algerian beaches in this coastal region where tourist development is limited. Visitors should anticipate the absence of permanent sanitary facilities or designated parking areas.
The name 'Shatieh al-Kabir' literally means 'The Great Beach' in Arabic, a designation reflecting its relative size compared to the small neighboring coves. This Algerian coast, historically a traditional Mediterranean fishing area, remains largely untransformed by mass tourism. During the 1990s and 2000s, the region experienced population growth linked to the establishment of small artisanal fishing ports; Shatieh al-Kabir thus remains frequented mainly by local residents and fishermen who dock their boats there at the end of the day, rather than by organized tourist flows.
