Salavaux Beach stretches along the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel in western Switzerland, a few kilometers west of Neuchâtel. The lake, the largest body of water entirely within Switzerland, offers a peaceful shoreline lined with meadows and small woods that gently slope down to the water. The region, characterized by the nearby Jura mountains, enjoys a southeast exposure that softens the lake breezes even in the mid-season. This beach serves as a discreet access point to the lake, distinct from the more structured facilities at Plage CH located 1.6 and 1.7 km away, respectively. The shoreline has a tranquil character, away from tourist concentrations, with a gradual slope into the water that facilitates easy entry. The atmosphere remains that of a local swimming spot rather than a resort destination, frequented by residents of nearby villages and Sunday walkers. No major infrastructure surrounds the site: there is no formal parking, no restrooms, and no lifeguard supervision. The site does not have Blue Flag status. Access is free and open, a typical characteristic of small Swiss lakeside beaches. The nearest supervised swimming areas (Baignade CH) are located 3.3 and 4.9 km away, confirming the non-institutional status of this water point.
Salavaux is named after the small locality that overlooks it, which itself derives from the Latin "sala" (hall, dwelling). Lake Neuchâtel, formed by the retreat of glacial ice during the Quaternary period, has long shaped the economy and social life along its shores. In the 19th century, the natural beaches of the lake were rarely visited for leisure swimming; it was only with the arrival of the railway and the democratization of bathing that sites like Salavaux attracted the first bathers. Even today, the beach retains this discreet local vocation, without radical changes to the landscape.
