Bains du Saugy

Les Bains du Saugy extend along the southern shore of Lake Geneva, in the canton of Geneva, a few kilometers east of the city. This portion of the Genevan shoreline is characterized by gradual banks and direct access to the water, typical of the lake's northwest coast. The area, dominated by the Alps in the background, offers a succession of small beaches and public bathing facilities that punctuate this residential and peri-urban zone. The site is distinguished by its accessible and tranquil character, contrasting with the hustle and bustle of beaches further downstream. 800 meters away is Plage Gitana, while Pointe-à-Bise and Plage du Reposoir are about 3 kilometers away. Les Bains du Saugy retain a local atmosphere, frequented mainly by residents of the surrounding area and swimmers seeking easy entry into the lake. The shore, uncrowded outside the summer season, allows for unhindered swimming. Access to the site is free and open to the public. No supervision is provided on site, and permanent facilities are not documented. The absence of the Blue Flag label reflects its status as a free swimming area, without formal administrative management. Visitors should anticipate their personal comfort and respect the lake's weather conditions, particularly seasonal water temperature variations and possible water level fluctuations.

About this spot

The name "Saugy" refers to old Genevan toponymy, likely derived from a local surname or an Alemannic dialect term. This bathing area is part of the long history of Lake Geneva's appropriation by riparian communities, where each small beach and water access point has been a part of daily life long before the emergence of modern seaside tourism. From the 19th century onwards, the Genevan shores were gradually equipped with public baths, responding to both the sanitary needs and the leisure activities of the growing urban population. Les Bains du Saugy embody this Genevan tradition of accessible and unpretentious lake bathing.
