Caspar Headlands State Beach

Caspar Headlands State Beach extends along the Mendocino coast in Northern California, about 150 kilometers south of the Oregon border. This portion of the Pacific coastline is characterized by spectacular cliffs plunging towards the ocean, while the shore alternates between rocky coves and stretches of black volcanic sand. The bay itself, facing the open sea, offers direct exposure to the swells of the Pacific Ocean, creating a powerful and seasonally changing coastal dynamic. The beach itself is distinguished by its wild and undeveloped character, contrasting sharply with Jug Handle Beach, located 1.8 kilometers to the south and more frequented. Conversely, nearby coves in the immediate vicinity (Plage US-W at 0.9 kilometers) retain a similar profile of limited accessibility. Upon arrival at the site, visitors are struck by the verticality of the rock formations framing access to the beach, and the near-total absence of tourist amenities. The sand, dark and dense, stretches between rocky outcrops covered with brown algae, while powerful waves constantly shape the coastline. Caspar Headlands State Beach has no formal facilities: no dedicated parking, no toilets, no swimming supervision. Access is on foot from the coastal trails of the State Park, with no amenities for wheelchair accessibility. No Blue Flag status has been awarded. Swimming remains possible but requires knowledge of local oceanic conditions and respect for the characteristic coastal currents of this area.

About this spot

Caspar gets its name from the first Russian settlers who established themselves in the region in the 19th century, when the Russian-American Company exploited the marine resources of the Californian coast. The cliffs overlooking the beach are composed of ancient metamorphic rocks, evidence of the intense tectonic activity shaping the Mendocino coast. Today integrated into the Californian State Park system, the site remains one of the few segments of the north coast to retain its preserved character, attracting hikers and marine wildlife observers rather than mass bathers.
