شاطئ مشرح الشعير

Located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, about 15 kilometers east of Algiers, this beach is part of a string of coves and inlets that characterize the coastline of the Mitidja. The shore, backed by rock formations typical of this region, benefits from direct exposure to northerly winds and offers a clear view of the Mediterranean. The immediate hinterland alternates between small limestone headlands and residential areas set back from the coast. The beach extends modestly between its two immediate neighbors: Shati al-Marsa 400 meters away and Plage DZ 800 meters away. Unlike these, it remains little frequented and retains a more raw, less developed character. The shore presents a natural configuration where sand strips alternate with small rocky outcrops, typical of beaches in this stretch of Algerian coastline. The water, generally clear in summer, offers bathing accessible without special preparation, although sea conditions vary by season. No structured facilities are reported on site. The beach has neither supervision nor accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Its lack of Blue Flag status reflects the status of many small Algerian beaches, which operate outside formalized tourist circuits. Access is directly from local coastal roads.

About this spot

The name "Shati Mashrah al-Sha'ir"—literally "beach of the barley landing"—refers to the agricultural history of this coastal region, where crops descended to the sea's edge. The Mitidja, a vast fertile plain in northern Algeria, long supplied Algiers with agricultural products; this toponym preserves its memory. Geologically, this stretch of coastline belongs to the Tellian limestone chain, whose rocks regularly emerge, shaping the characteristic landscape. This beach, though little documented in modern tourist guides, remains an anchor point for local residents, who come for late afternoon relaxation during the Mediterranean summer.
