Playa Preciosa (Ciénaga)

Playa Preciosa stretches along the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, in the Limón province, about 8 kilometers south of Puerto Limón. This section of the Costa Rican Atlantic coastline is characterized by a succession of black volcanic sand beaches, bordered by coconut trees and dense tropical vegetation that descends to the high tide line. The bay offers direct exposure to Atlantic waves, with often pronounced surf and strong coastal currents, typical of this region where the northeast trade winds dominate from December to April. The beach itself is part of a string of small, sparsely frequented coastal shores. Playa Platanares, 1.6 kilometers to the north, and Playa Zapote, 2 kilometers away, are the two closest beaches, forming with Preciosa a fragmented but continuous swimming area. The site retains an undeveloped character, typical of the beaches on the southern coast of Limón: the black sand contrasts with the green, turbid waters, the atmosphere remains humid and tropical, and human presence is discreet. The powerful breakers and unstable seabeds make swimming challenging, especially outside the calmer seasons. No basic facilities are indicated on site: no toilets, showers, designated parking, or restaurant services. The beach is not Blue Flag certified and no supervision is provided. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not available. Visitors must come self-sufficient and well-prepared, with water and provisions, respecting the often difficult oceanic conditions.
