Spiaggia di Campomarino stretches along the Ionian coast of Basilicata, in southern Italy, about 40 kilometers south of Taranto. This part of the southern Adriatic coast is characterized by low, sandy beaches that stretch between wetlands and coastal dunes, forming a landscape typical of Magna Graecia. The shore, with its gentle profile, benefits from direct exposure to the warm waters of the Ionian Sea. Backed by a still relatively preserved dune system, the beach offers a less crowded atmosphere than its immediate neighbors. 700 meters to the north is Spiaggia presso le Dune di Campomarino, while Spiaggia d'Ayala is only one kilometer away. The fine, light sand, typical of this coast, gradually widens towards the shallow water, creating progressive swimming conditions. The absence of massive constructions in the background gives the site a largely natural character, although the proximity of small coastal centers remains noticeable. The site has neither swimming supervision nor formal reception facilities. No Blue Flag distinction designates it. Access remains free and direct, without specific facilities for reduced mobility. This configuration makes it a choice for visitors seeking a coastal experience without standardized tourist services.
Campomarino derives its name from the agricultural plain stretching behind the coast, historically dedicated to livestock and cereal cultivation. This coastal area, long marginal in the tourist circuits of southern Italy, retains traces of the feudal system that marked Basilicata until the agrarian reforms of the 20th century. The dunes bordering the beach constitute a relict Pleistocene ecosystem, a refuge for halophytic flora and rare coastal fauna. According to local accounts, Mediterranean storms in the autumn of 2017 partially reconfigured the dune system, recalling the constant dynamics of this exposed coastline.
