La plage du camp des oulemas extends along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, in the Algiers region, a few kilometers east of the urban center. This stretch of coastline belongs to the Bay of Algiers, characterized by generally calm waters and a rocky coast alternating with sandy enclaves. The geological substrate of the region, dominated by Miocene limestone formations, shapes a coastal landscape where low cliffs coexist with pebble and fine sand beaches. The beach itself has a modest layout, bordered by Plage DZ 200 meters to the west and Plage des Dattiés 400 meters to the east. Its direct exposure to the north-south Mediterranean makes it a relatively sheltered site compared to the western Algerian sectors, benefiting from the temperate sea breezes that characterize the Algiers basin. The shore hosts regular local patronage, particularly during the summer months, without the massive developments of tourist resorts. Access remains rudimentary: no permanent facilities are reported, no bathing supervision, and no reception infrastructure. The site does not hold Blue Flag status. Its undeveloped character makes it an alternative to overcrowded urban beaches, intended for visitors seeking a less formalized coastal experience.
The name Camp des Oulemas evokes the intellectual history of Algeria in the 20th century. The Oulemas—Muslim scholars and reformers—played a foundational role in Algerian national consciousness, notably through the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars founded in 1931. This beach bears the name of a gathering or training place associated with this intellectual movement. The site thus embodies the mnemonic geography of the Algiers region, where coastal urbanization intertwines with historical landmarks of the struggle for independence and Muslim modernity.
