Haad Chao Phao

Haad Chao Phao extends along the western coast of Koh Samui island, Thailand, about 40 kilometers off the mainland. This stretch of coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and fine sandy beaches bordered by granite rocks typical of the Gulf of Thailand archipelago. The bay, open to the west, offers direct exposure to monsoon winds, creating often rough sea conditions depending on the season. The beach itself remains relatively preserved, less frequented than its immediate neighbors Secret Beach (0.5 km away) and Nudist Beach (also 0.5 km away). The fine white sand gradually extends towards turquoise water, while rocky outcrops punctuate the coastline. At low tide, coral areas and small rock pools become accessible, revealing a rich marine ecosystem. The atmosphere remains tranquil, far from the tourist concentrations of Koh Samui's northern beaches. No major facilities are reported on site: no toilets, parking, or directly developed restaurants. Swimming is unsupervised, and access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. Sea conditions and the presence of rocks require particular caution, especially during periods of strong tidal coefficients.

About this spot

The name 'Haad Chao Phao' literally means 'fisherman's beach' in Thai, a reference to the Muslim fishing communities that historically populated the coasts of Koh Samui. The granite geology of this region dates back over 250 million years, forming the characteristic rocky massifs of southern Thailand. Unlike the developed beaches of the north of the island, Haad Chao Phao has retained a wilder character, attracting travelers seeking less charted experiences. Local fishermen continue to use the small adjacent coves as mooring points, keeping alive a centuries-old maritime tradition.
