Spiagga Le Fontanelle

Located on the Swiss shore of Lake Maggiore, about 100 km north of Milan and 30 km south of Locarno, Spiaggia Le Fontanelle occupies a discreet segment of the Ticino coastline. This stretch of coast, characterized by gentle shores that gradually plunge into the deep waters of the Alpine lake, is part of a landscape of wooded hills typical of the Three Lakes region. Lake Maggiore, with its 65 km length, offers a tranquil atmosphere here, far from the bustle of the Italian lakeside resorts opposite. The beach is distinguished by its clean character and direct access to the clear lake waters. Unlike Spiaggia Le Serenelle, located 2.2 km to the north and more frequented, or Spiaggia Resca, 3.1 km away, which benefits from better tourist signage, this site retains a certain intimacy. The absence of official supervision and standardized facilities reinforces this impression of authenticity. Visitors find direct swimming, without artificiality, where water quality takes precedence over amenities. Access remains simple, although lacking dedicated parking or formal restrooms. No Blue Flag certification marks this beach, reflecting its status as a basic swimming spot rather than a developed destination. The proximity of Spiaggia di Cannero (4.4 km) and Public Beach Spiaggia Oggebbio (5.7 km) offers alternatives for those seeking more developed infrastructure. For swimmers seeking calm and direct connection with the lake, this site responds without hesitation.

About this spot

The name 'Fontanelle' evokes the small natural springs that historically feed this section of the Ticino shore. Lake Maggiore, formed by glacial erosion during the Pleistocene, remains one of the deepest bodies of water in the Alps (372 m). Since the 19th century, the Swiss shore of Lake Maggiore attracted vacationers fleeing the mists of the Lombard plains. Unlike its Italian counterparts that became seaside resorts, this Swiss stretch has preserved a resolutely local profile, where Ticino families continue to frequent beaches without heavy tourist infrastructure, perpetuating an intimate relationship with the lake that previous generations knew.
