San Gregorio Private Beach stretches along the Californian Pacific coast, about 50 kilometers south of San Francisco, in San Mateo County. This stretch of coastline is part of the Crystal Coast, a region marked by steep sandstone and shale cliffs that plunge directly into the ocean. The shore here has the wild and preserved character typical of this section of the Northern California Pacific, where public beaches remain rare and often difficult to access. The beach is distinguished from its immediate neighbors by its private status, which limits access and preserves its secluded character. 1.1 kilometers away is San Gregorio Beach, its more frequented public counterpart, while Tunitas Beach, 2.5 kilometers to the south, offers another accessible alternative. The site itself remains undeveloped, without formal tourist facilities, making it a place where coastal geology takes precedence over infrastructure. Visitors find a raw atmosphere, dominated by the surf of the Pacific Ocean and the absence of crowds. Access to this private beach is restricted and requires authorization. No supervision services are provided, and sanitary or parking facilities are not documented. The absence of Blue Flag certification reflects the site's undeveloped status. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not available.
San Gregorio derives its name from the eponymous patron saint, a legacy of the Spanish nomenclature that marked the Californian coast. This region of the San Mateo coastline, formed by the erosion of ancient geological formations, remains an area where coastal property rights have long restricted public access. Historically, these private beaches served as refuges for affluent families from the San Francisco Bay seeking isolation. Even today, the contrast between San Gregorio Private Beach and its public neighbor illustrates the Californian tensions between private preservation and public access to the coastline.
