Platja de la Mar Xica

Located on the coast of Tarragona, in southern Catalonia, Platja de la Mar Xica is part of the string of coves that mark the rocky coastline between Salou and Cambrils. This portion of the Mediterranean coast is characterized by limestone cliffs plunging directly into turquoise waters, typical of the rugged landscape of the Costa Dorada. The hinterland, covered with umbrella pines and Mediterranean scrub, descends steeply to the sea, creating an atmosphere of relative intimacy despite the proximity of neighboring seaside resorts. The beach itself remains a small, preserved cove, framed by eroded rocks that give it a distinct physiognomy from its immediate neighbors. 700 meters to the north, Platja de la Parreta offers a similar but more accessible profile; 1.2 kilometers to the south, Platja de Surrac opens more towards the open sea. La Mar Xica retains a less frequented character, where visitors discover a narrow strip of fine sand dominated by rocky walls that filter the light in the late afternoon. Access remains modest, without major infrastructure, preserving its raw and undeveloped appearance. No lifeguard service is provided on site. The absence of dedicated parking and standard facilities (showers, toilets) makes this cove particularly suitable for autonomous visitors seeking to get away from over-organized beaches. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed, as natural access involves slopes and rocky passages. The beach does not fly the Blue Flag label, reflecting its status as a minor cove rather than a structured tourist destination.

About this spot

The name 'Mar Xica' evokes in Catalan a small sea, a common vernacular designation for coves in this region. This portion of the Tarragona coastline is part of the Late Cretaceous geology, where marine limestones form the characteristic cliffs of the Costa Dorada. Historically, these small beaches served as makeshift anchorages for local fishing boats before the tourist boom of the 1960s. Today, La Mar Xica remains a refuge for divers and coastal hikers who traverse the coastal path connecting Salou to Cambrils, a route that reveals the wild geography of this Mediterranean coast often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors.
