La Punta

La Punta extends along the Tessin shore of Lake Maggiore, in the immediate vicinity of the Italo-Swiss border, in the canton of Ticino. Located about 15 kilometers north of Locarno, this beach occupies a strategic position on one of Europe's largest Alpine lakes, where deep blue waters stretch between wooded mountain slopes. Lake Maggiore, fed by the Ticino River, offers a temperate Mediterranean atmosphere here, moderated by altitude and the continental influence of the Alps dominating the northern horizon. The beach itself is a quiet enclave within a cluster of small bathing areas that mark this section of the shore. Only 100 meters away is La Punta Beach, while Plage CH extends 800 meters and 1.1 kilometers away. Unlike its neighbors, La Punta retains a less structured character, offering visitors a more direct and less developed approach to the lake. Access is from the lakeside paths that wind between houses and typical Tessin riverside vegetation, where hazel and chestnut trees grow alongside pines. This beach remains without official supervision and does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. No major facilities are documented on site, preserving its natural appearance. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not provided. Swimming is done under the visitors' responsibility, in generally calm waters except during windy periods which can raise waves from the north.

About this spot

The name 'La Punta' simply evokes the geographical point formed by this rocky promontory jutting into Lake Maggiore. This region of Ticino, historically part of the Grisons Confederation before its integration into the canton of Ticino in 1803, still bears traces of its past as an Alpine trade hub. The lake itself long served as a transportation route between Swiss valleys and Lombardy. Small beaches like this one reflect the rural economy of the 19th century, where shores were merely points of access to the lake for fishermen and transporters. Today, they remain local swimming spots, frequented more by Ticino residents than by mass tourism.
