Plage Gitana stretches along the southern shore of Lake Geneva, in the canton of Vaud, a few kilometers east of Nyon. This portion of the Alpine coastline borders a freshwater lake with changing hues, framed by the Alps in the background. The shore, characterized by a succession of small coves and developed swimming areas, is part of a landscape of lakeside shores alternating between fine sandy beaches and rocky access points, typical of this transition region between the Jura and the Alps. The site is distinguished by its direct access to the water and its relaxed atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of large tourist beaches. Immediately nearby, Plage du Reposoir (2.6 km) offers a similar ambiance, while Pointe-à-Bise (3 km) is more exposed to the wind. Upon arrival, visitors discover a beach with an intimate character, where local families regularly gather. The lake water, relatively temperate in summer, invites unpretentious swimming; the bottom gradually deepens, allowing for a progressive entry into the water. Access to the site is free, with no entrance fee. No lifeguard service is provided on site, and facilities are minimal. Visitors with reduced mobility will encounter access difficulties. The site does not fly the Blue Flag, reflecting its status as a community beach without formalized tourist infrastructure.
The toponym "Gitana" likely refers to an old property or a local designation from the 19th century, although the exact etymology remains obscure in Vaudois archives. Lake Geneva, formed by the Rhône glacier at the end of the last ice age, has shaped this shoreline for millennia. Plage Gitana embodies the character of small Swiss lakeside swimming spots, where the absence of systematic commercialization preserves a certain authenticity. Residents of the canton come here regularly, especially in summer, perpetuating a quiet leisure practice deeply rooted in regional culture.
