East Green Lake Beach

East Green Lake Beach is located on the eastern shore of Green Lake, a freshwater body in the northwestern United States, about 8 kilometers north of downtown Seattle, Washington State. The lake, formed by a glacier over 16,000 years ago, is 2.3 kilometers long and is one of the most accessible basins in the metropolitan area. The surrounding shoreline alternates between wooded areas and developed spaces, with paved walkways along the lake's perimeter. The beach is characterized by a fine gravel substrate that gradually slopes into the calm lake waters. Unlike West Green Lake Beach, located just 0.8 kilometers to the west and more frequented due to its direct access to parking, East Green Lake Beach offers a quieter atmosphere, although it is less developed. The site remains less developed compared to facilities further north, notably 6th Avenue West Street End, 4 kilometers away. The lake waters, though cold in winter, reach acceptable temperatures for swimming in summer. The absence of significant currents and the shallow initial depth make it a regular swimming spot for neighborhood residents. Access to the beach is limited for people with reduced mobility, as the infrastructure is minimal. No lifeguard service is provided on site. The beach is not Blue Flag certified. Visitors should anticipate the absence of standard amenities such as toilets or showers in the immediate vicinity.

About this spot

Green Lake, whose English name evokes the greenish hue of its glacial mineral-rich waters, was shaped by the retreat of Pleistocene glaciers. Long used as a natural reservoir by local communities, the lake underwent a major transformation in the early 20th century when the city of Seattle began developing its shores into a public recreational space. The eastern shore, less developed than its western counterpart, has retained a more natural character. The harsh winters of the Pacific Northwest regularly freeze the lake, turning the beaches into icy landscapes—a traditional skating practice that persists among the more adventurous locals.
