Plage El Bheira

Plage El Bheira extends along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, about 35 kilometers west of Oran, in the Oran Littoral region. This stretch of shore is part of a relatively preserved coastal section, where the Mediterranean meets limestone cliffs and rock formations typical of northwestern Algeria. The surrounding coastline alternates between sandy coves and rocky headlands, a common geomorphological characteristic of this entire coastal region. The beach itself remains undeveloped, retaining a marked natural character. In the immediate vicinity, Plage de Bidar (7.6 km) and شاطئ معروف (4.7 km) are the closest landmarks, while شاطئ شايب رأسه is located 8.9 km to the east. Unlike the more developed seaside resorts of the Oran coast, El Bheira offers direct access to a less frequented coast, where sand and pebbles coexist with rocky outcrops. The atmosphere remains that of an authentic Mediterranean coastal beach, without invasive tourist infrastructure. The site has no bathing supervision or facilities for people with reduced mobility. No Blue Flag certifies water quality. Visitors must plan their own equipment and respect the natural conditions of the coast. The lack of formal facilities makes it a destination for autonomous bathers seeking a less structured coastal experience.

About this spot

El Bheira, whose name means "the lake" in Arabic, owes its name to the local geographical configuration: a coastal depression that, during heavy rains, retains runoff water and creates temporary pools resembling a body of water. This area of the Oran coast, although less documented than the nearby urban beaches, is part of the Quaternary Mediterranean geological history, marked by sea-level fluctuations that shaped the current cliffs and coves. Locally, the beach remains associated with coastal fishing practices and the journeys of artisanal fishermen who have frequented these waters for generations, before organized seaside tourism restructured the Algerian coastline from the 1970s onwards.
