Los Charcos

Los Charcos extends along the northeast coast of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, a few kilometers southwest of Arrecife. This portion of the Canarian volcanic coastline is characterized by an alternation of small coves and black rock formations typical of the archipelago, shaped by Quaternary basaltic eruptions. The Atlantic Ocean directly borders this area, where the cold Canary currents temper the waters even in summer. The site, intimately linked to its immediate neighbors—Playa de los Charcos 100 meters away and Playa de las Cucharas 600 meters away—offers a less urbanized configuration than the latter. The name 'Los Charcos' (the puddles) evokes the small natural pools formed by low tides among the rocks, creating sheltered and shallow swimming areas. The atmosphere remains that of an authentic island coastal landscape, where black rock dominates and xerophytic vegetation colonizes the rear cliffs. No major facilities equip the site: no toilets, parking, or visible restaurant in the data. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label, and swimming is done without official supervision. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not adapted. The visiting conditions remain natural and minimalist, reflecting the preserved character of this portion of the Canarian volcanic coastline.

About this spot

The toponym 'Los Charcos' refers to the local geomorphology: these rocky depressions fill with seawater at each tide, forming natural pools exploited since pre-Hispanic times by the inhabitants of Lanzarote. The island itself, shaped by recent volcanism (last eruption in 1736), bears the scars of this geological activity in its coastal landscape. According to local accounts, these small pools long served as brackish water reservoirs for fishermen and farmers, before tourism redefined the use of the Canarian coastline in the 20th century.
