Located in southern Portugal, about 50 kilometers west of Faro and not far from the Spanish border, Playa de Castilla stretches along the western Algarve coast. This portion of the coastline is characterized by fine sandy beaches bordered by low dunes and Mediterranean coastal vegetation. The region, sparsely urbanized, remains largely preserved from the massive tourist developments that mark other sectors of the Algarve. In the immediate vicinity, Plage PT is only 1.1 kilometers away, while the Doñana Natural Park, bordering Spain, is 5.9 kilometers to the east. The beach itself offers a vast expanse of fine, golden sand, gently sloping towards generally calm waters. The absence of major seaside facilities gives the site a relatively tranquil character, contrasting with the more frequented beaches located further east. The coastline remains exposed to Atlantic influences, particularly in winter, which can generate some choppiness. Playa de Matalascañas, 9.6 kilometers away, is the nearest tourist hub, equipped with more developed infrastructure. The site has no official supervision or permanent seaside facilities. Access is not developed for people with reduced mobility. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. Its undeveloped character makes it a destination for visitors seeking a less structured coastal experience, particularly popular during the spring and autumn transition months.
The toponym "Castilla" evokes the inland lands of the Spanish Castilian plateau, although the beach is Portuguese. This nomenclature reflects the turbulent history of the Iberian border, where territories long changed hands between rival kingdoms. The Sotavento Algarvio region, to which this sector belongs, remains one of the least densely populated areas of contemporary Algarve, thus preserving fragile dune ecosystems and coastal habitats. The absence of intensive tourist development contrasts with the rapid transformation trajectory experienced by neighboring beaches since the 1970s, making it an unintentional laboratory for what the Algarve coastline could be without massive interventions.
