Playa Angostura

Playa Angostura stretches along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, about 5.5 km from Puntarenas, the region's main port. Located in the Puntarenas province, this beach borders the Gulf of Nicoya, a large semi-enclosed bay characterized by warm waters and pronounced tides. The surrounding coastline alternates between fine sandy beaches and rocky areas, with a succession of small coves accessible on foot during low tide. The area behind the beach is dominated by dense tropical vegetation, typical of the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The beach itself offers a tranquil character, less frequented than its immediate neighbors. Playa Chacarita, 1.9 km away, and Playa Pochote, 2 km away, attract more visitors and families, while Angostura retains a more secluded atmosphere. At high tide, the sand strip narrows considerably, compressed between the gulf waters and the coastal vegetation. Swimming conditions depend heavily on lunar and seasonal cycles: the green season (May to November) brings larger swells and variable currents, while the dry season offers more stable conditions. No major tourist infrastructure is reported on site. The beach has no lifeguard service or accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Access is mainly via local roads from Puntarenas, with informal parking on the outskirts. The proximity of Puntarenas, less than 6 km away, allows access to services (restaurants, shops) in the city itself, although the Angostura area remains underdeveloped in terms of tourism.

About this spot

The name 'Angostura' evokes narrowness ('angosto' in Spanish), likely a reference to the configuration of the shore or a narrow passage in the gulf at this location. The Puntarenas region, historically a port for exporting coffee and bananas, reached its peak in the 19th century before the decline of local maritime trade. Playa Angostura remains a testament to this less touristy coastal Costa Rica, frequented mainly by local fishermen and residents of Puntarenas seeking relaxation. The waters of the Gulf of Nicoya, rich in marine biodiversity, occasionally attract wildlife observers: dolphins, rays, and small sharks are regularly seen there, particularly during the rainy season.
