Playa Salmonete

Located in eastern Andalusia, about 70 km east of Málaga, Playa Salmonete is part of the Costa Tropical coastline, a less densely populated stretch than its western neighbor. The beach borders the Mediterranean, facing a mountainous hinterland where the last foothills of the Sierra Nevada descend to the sea. The shore, characterized by a substrate of fine earth and sand, stretches modestly between the rock formations typical of this section of the Andalusian coast. This small beach remains off the main tourist routes. Located just 300 meters from Playa de La Chucha and 1.1 km from Plage de la Joya, it retains a less developed character than these two close neighbors. The shore, without supervision, offers an autonomous swimming experience, with direct exposure to Mediterranean swells. The absence of monumental constructions and heavy infrastructure gives the site a resolutely local atmosphere, frequented mainly by residents of the surrounding villages. No standard tourist facilities are reported on site. The beach does not have Blue Flag certification and remains inaccessible to people with reduced mobility. Access is free and informal, with no dedicated parking or basic services (toilets, showers, restaurants). This configuration makes it suitable for visitors seeking an alternative to the equipped beaches in the region, accepting a certain rusticity.

About this spot

Salmonete means grouper in Spanish, a small Mediterranean fish prized in coastal cuisine. The name evokes the artisanal fishing traditions that still structure the local economy of this part of the Costa Tropical. This area, long bypassed by the major seaside developments of the 1960s-1980s, has retained a mixed economic profile where mountain agriculture and small-scale fishing coexist. The surrounding villages, including Carchuna (1.7 km away), perpetuate a less touristy Mediterranean way of life, where beaches remain spaces for work as well as leisure.
