Plage Remila

Plage Remila extends along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, in the northwestern region of the country, near the Dahra coast. Located at 37°N and 7.25°E, it is part of a string of coves and beaches dotting this stretch of coastline characterized by limestone rock formations and often steep access points. The shore here alternates between small sandy bays and rocky projections, typical of Algerian coastal geomorphology where the Mediterranean meets mountainous terrain. The beach itself remains largely undeveloped, retaining an authentic and uncrowded coastal character. It is part of a continuum of small coastal beaches: Plage d'el Marsa is only 1.2 km away, while Plage de Oued Lekbir is 1.4 km away. These three sites share a similar atmosphere, far from massive tourist facilities, with direct access to generally clear water in the summer season. The sand, where present, alternates with natural rocky sections, and wave exposure varies with seasonal weather conditions and bay orientation. The absence of official supervision and standardized facilities characterizes this sector of the Algerian coast. No Blue Flag certifies sanitary or safety conditions. Visitors should expect minimal infrastructure: no formal parking, no public showers, no adjacent restaurants. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. This setup reflects the status of many Algerian beaches, which remain off the international tourist routes and away from massive coastal investments.

About this spot

The name Remila likely evokes a local geographical formation or a Berber micro-toponym, although its exact etymology remains poorly documented in Western tourist sources. This stretch of the Algerian coast, between Oran and Dahra, has long served as an area for artisanal fishing and coastal passage for local communities. Unlike the Mediterranean beaches of the Maghreb that have become seaside destinations, Remila and its immediate neighbors retain their primary function as shores for subsistence: fishing nets are still regularly dried here, and traditional boats dock at the freshwater outlets of adjacent wadis, reminding us that seaside tourism remains a recent and partial phenomenon on this Algerian coast.
