Playa de Baja Mar stretches along the Mediterranean coast of the Murcia region in southeastern Spain, in the immediate vicinity of the coastal town of San Pedro del Pinatar. Located about 50 kilometers south of Cartagena, this beach is part of a string of coves and beaches that punctuate the rocky and fragmented coastline of the Mar Menor, Spain's largest coastal lagoon. The area is characterized by alternating small sheltered bays and limestone promontories, with the arid hills typical of the region's semi-arid Mediterranean climate in the background. Backed by Cala del Ciscar (200 meters away) and close to Cala San Pedro (1.7 kilometers away), Playa de Baja Mar offers direct access to calm, shallow waters, characteristic of this lagoon area. The shore combines fine sand and small pebbles, with a gentle slope that invites gradual swimming. The atmosphere remains that of a sparsely populated local beach, far from large seaside resorts, where the proximity of the rocky hills creates natural shaded areas in the late afternoon. The turquoise waters and the remarkable transparency of the lagoon are the main attractions of the site. No surveillance equipment is present on site, and access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. The beach does not have the Blue Flag label. The environment remains sparsely urbanized, with access essentially on foot from small coastal paths or via adjacent coves.
The name "Baja Mar" refers to low tide, a phenomenon particularly pronounced in the Mar Menor due to its lagoon nature and its shallow average depth. This coastal area, historically frequented by local fishermen and salt collectors, has retained its non-touristy character despite its proximity to San Pedro del Pinatar. The lagoon itself, formed several millennia ago by the accumulation of coastal spits, constitutes a unique ecosystem in the Western Mediterranean, recognized for its biodiversity and its exceptionally warm summer waters. Local inhabitants say that traditional fishermen knew every corner of these coves and adapted their outings to the complex tidal cycles of the Mar Menor, hence the importance of the term "baja mar" in local toponymy.
