Kayra Beach stretches along the Sea of Marmara coast, in the Bursa region of Asian Turkey, near the coastal village of Armutlu. This section of the Marmara coast is characterized by a succession of small coves and residential beaches, where summer houses overlook the shore directly. The sea here, although shallow near the coast, offers the typical gray-blue hue of the Marmara, framed by the wooded hills of northwestern Anatolia. The beach itself functions as a paid seaside resort, integrated into a complex of private resorts and facilities. Its immediate neighbors—Armutlu Yılandar Plajı 300 meters away and Motel Model Plajı 400 meters away—share the same seasonal tourist vocation. The site primarily caters to local and regional clientele from Istanbul or Bursa, particularly during the summer months. The atmosphere remains that of a modest Turkish family seaside resort: simple in its amenities, without cosmopolitan pretensions, but lively on weekends. Access to Kayra Beach is reserved for paying visitors. No Blue Flag certification distinguishes the site. Swimming is done without official supervision, and the infrastructure is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. Typical Turkish resort services—light catering, sun lounger rentals—are generally available in high season, although conditions vary from year to year.
The name Kayra comes from the Turkish 'kayra,' meaning 'return' or 'refuge'—a likely allusion to the small coves that dot this section of the Marmara coast. Armutlu, the village overlooking these beaches, derives its name from the Turkish word 'armut' (pear), reflecting the region's former agricultural economy before its tourism turn in the 1980s. This coastal area, long kept away from mass tourism from Istanbul, has gradually developed summer residences and small family resorts. Local residents say the first bathing huts date back to the 1970s, when city dwellers from Bursa discovered the Marmara as a summer escape from the heat of the interior.
