Plage municipale de Sciez

Sciez is located on the southern shore of Lake Geneva, about 25 kilometers east of Geneva and 15 kilometers west of Montreux. This stretch of the Swiss coast is characterized by a succession of small beaches and grassy areas that lie between the villages and the wooded slopes of the Vaud Alps. The lake, with its cold and deep waters, offers a width of nearly 14 kilometers here towards the French shore. The municipal beach of Sciez presents as direct access to the lake, modest in size but well integrated into the local urban fabric. In the immediate vicinity, Pointe de Promenthoux (10.5 km) and Plage de la Châtaigneraie (10.8 km) offer similar configurations: quiet shores, not densely populated, where the residential character prevails over tourist infrastructure. The site offers an unobstructed view of the lake and, in clear weather, of the Savoyard peaks to the south. The atmosphere remains that of a neighborhood beach, frequented mainly in the summer season by local residents and passing families. Access to the water is without administrative barriers. No lifeguard service is provided on site, and sanitary or comfort facilities are not documented. The absence of Blue Flag status reflects the informal status of this public space. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. Swimming conditions depend entirely on the season and variations in lake levels.

About this spot

Sciez, a small town in the Vaud region established on the morainic terraces of Lake Geneva, derives its name from the Latin 'Scetium,' an ancient Gallo-Roman estate. The village developed as an agricultural and wine-growing center before becoming, in the 20th century, a residential commune popular with Genevans. The municipal beach embodies this transition: once a simple landing stage for fishermen and washerwomen, it gradually became formalized as a public access point to the lake. Unlike the large beaches of the French Côte d'Azur, this Swiss shore has maintained a deliberate discretion, without shops or mass attractions, reflecting the Swiss ethic of preserving collective spaces.
