الغابة المقدسة

Located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, at approximately 36°34'N and 1°53'E, this beach is part of the rugged coastline of the Algiers region, characterized by alternating rocky coves and small sandy stretches. The shore, bordered by dense Mediterranean vegetation, opens onto a generally calm sea in summer, protected by coastal reliefs that temper exposure to Atlantic swells. The immediate environment combines limestone formations typical of this portion of the North African coast with a mosaic of natural habitats where traces of the region's endemic flora persist. The beach itself remains largely undeveloped, preserving a marked natural character. In the immediate vicinity, Plage des Martyrs (0.2 km) and Plage Hawert Lebehare (0.7 km) are nearby alternatives, while Plage la Crique (1 km) offers distinct geomorphological configurations. The site is distinguished by its reduced accessibility and the absence of formal tourist infrastructure, making it a destination for visitors seeking a less structured coastal experience than the nearby urban beaches. The coastline here retains a certain intimacy, with sometimes difficult access and generally moderate visitor numbers. No permanent facilities are reported on site: no toilets, showers, parking, or dining facilities. Swimming is unsupervised, and access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. The site does not have the Blue Flag label. Visitors should anticipate their complete autonomy and adapt their visit to weather conditions and tide times.

About this spot

The name "Forêt Sacrée" (Sacred Forest) evokes a historically rich geography: this Algerian coastal region, a crossroads of Mediterranean civilizations since antiquity, preserves vestiges of cults and ritual practices related to the sea. The wooded areas that dominate this part of the coast, although reduced today, recall the forest ecosystems that once covered the Maghreb. The proximity of Plage des Martyrs – a name commemorating the resistance fighters of the Algerian independence struggle – places this sector in a context where physical geography and political history intertwine. Local fishermen continue to access these coves for their daily catches, perpetuating a millennia-old coastal use.
