Fonte da Telha stretches along the Alentejo coast in western Algarve, about 50 km southwest of Lisbon. This sandy beach is part of a coastline characterized by ochre cliffs and eroded rock formations, typical of this region where the Atlantic Ocean exerts constant pressure. The shore, facing southwest, directly receives the Atlantic swell, making it an energetic and exposed area, contrasting with the more sheltered coves of Praia 19 (1.6 km away) or the quieter atmosphere of Praia do Castelo (4.9 km to the east). The fine, golden sand of Fonte da Telha stretches over a moderate width, framed by rocky outcrops that structure the space. The atmosphere is that of a working beach: wind and swell conditions regularly attract kitesurfers, whose dynamic presence shapes the character of the place. Upon arrival, one perceives this sporting vocation, far from the classic seaside atmosphere. The beach remains undeveloped, retaining a certain natural ruggedness that appeals to visitors seeking coastal authenticity. No structured facilities are reported on site: no toilets, showers, or dedicated parking. Swimming is done without official supervision. Access remains free but without facilities for reduced mobility. This minimalist configuration reflects Fonte da Telha's status: a functional beach, oriented towards water sports, without infrastructural pretensions, ideal for board sports enthusiasts and coastal explorers who accept a certain rusticity.
The name "Fonte da Telha" evokes a historical spring (fonte) associated with tiles (telha in Portuguese), probably referring to old artisanal workshops or geological formations in the area. This Alentejo coast, long remaining outside mass tourist circuits, retains a marked rural identity. Over the past two decades, Fonte da Telha has gradually established itself as a reference regional kitesurfing spot, attracting a community of riders who appreciate the consistency of the west wind and the quality of the swell. The meteorological conditions, particularly favorable in autumn and winter, have transformed this forgotten beach into a seasonal meeting point for board sports enthusiasts, without generating rampant tourist development.
