Playa Leona

Playa Leona extends along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Guanacaste province, about 15 kilometers south of Montezuma. This stretch of coastline belongs to the Nicoya Peninsula, a region characterized by deep bays, eroded rock formations, and tropical vegetation descending to the tide line. The Pacific here displays changing hues depending on the season: emerald green in the dry season, blue-grey during the rains from October to November. The shore is part of a string of undeveloped beaches, where human impact remains discreet. Backed by dense secondary forest, Playa Leona offers a more secluded character than its immediate neighbors. Playa Buenos Aires, 1.2 kilometers to the north, attracts more visitors and small businesses; Playa Blanquita, 1.6 kilometers further, remains similar in atmosphere but slightly more frequented. Conversely, Playa Leona retains a sense of discovery, with less developed access and visible marine life in shallow waters. Rocks emerging at low tide create natural pools suitable for observing fish and crustaceans. The fine, light sand alternates with sections of volcanic black gravel typical of this coast. No permanent facilities are reported on site: no toilets, structured parking, or showers. The beach is not Blue Flag certified and is not supervised. Access remains informal, via coastal paths or tracks from inland. This lack of infrastructure reflects a local desire for preservation, common in this region where tourism remains selective and development is limited to already dense areas.

About this spot

The name "Leona" refers to the historical presence of jaguars (felinos) in the Nicoya Peninsula, although these large cats are now very rare there. Playa Leona is part of the geological extension of the Guanacaste mountain range, whose ancient eruptions shaped the volcanic substrate visible in black on the sand. Since the 1980s, this coast has attracted surfers and naturalists seeking beaches without hotel infrastructure; small landowner communities maintain a subsistence economy based on artisanal fishing and agroforestry. Local fishermen say that Leona's waters, colder than those to the north due to upwellings, concentrate schools of mackerel and tuna during the transition between seasons.
