Dewey Beach

Dewey Beach extends along the eastern Vermont coast, in the Eastern Canadian region, near Lake Memphremagog which borders the border between Vermont and Quebec. Located at approximately 43.4°N latitude, this beach occupies a section of the lacustrine shoreline characterized by wooded banks and gradual access to the water. The setting remains that of an inland body of water with cold waters, surrounded by mixed forests typical of New England. The beach itself is distinguished by the presence of summer supervision, a sign of regular use and concern for swimmer safety. Its immediate neighbors—Plage CA-E at 1.1 km—form a string of lake access points, while Georges Mills Beach, 4 km away, offers an alternative within accessible range. The site offers direct lake swimming, without the complications of tides or ocean surf, with a local relaxation atmosphere rather than a tourist one. Access remains basic: seasonal supervision ensures the presence of lifeguards during the warm months. No additional facilities are reported on site, and access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. The beach does not have Blue Flag certification. Visitors should expect a clean environment, without adjacent commercial infrastructure.

About this spot

Dewey Beach gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon tradition of naming public places in Vermont. Lake Memphremagog, whose waters feed this beach, bears a name of Abenaki origin meaning 'large body of water'. Historically, this region served as a trade and migration corridor between the British colonies to the south and the Quebec lands, with lake beaches serving as supply points for canoe travelers. Today, Dewey Beach retains this modest stopover function, frequented by local residents rather than mass tourism, perpetuating a practice of lake swimming rooted in New England's summer habits since the 19th century.
