Praia de Quarteira

Quarteira stretches along the central Algarve coast, approximately 15 kilometers west of Faro and just inland from Loulé. This stretch of Portuguese shoreline faces due south toward the Atlantic Ocean and features a succession of fine sandy beaches backed by ochre cliffs and pine groves that descend to the water's edge. The relatively straight coastline sits within a densely developed coastal zone where tourist facilities blend with natural areas. The beach itself comprises golden, compact sand that's ideal for walking and swimming. Unlike the rocky coves that characterize western Algarve, this section offers an open exposure to Atlantic swells, creating variable bathing conditions depending on the season. Nearby beaches—situated 200 to 800 meters away—form a continuous stretch of coast where each segment has its own character and visitor patterns, though all remain subject to the same coastal dynamics and regional tourism infrastructure. No lifeguard service is provided. The beach is not equipped for visitors with reduced mobility. The site does not hold Blue Flag certification.

About this spot

Quarteira takes its name from the Portuguese word "quarta," referring to the fourth administrative division of the medieval region. Historically, this part of the Algarve was dominated by coastal fishing and subsistence farming until the 1960s, when it underwent a radical transformation driven by beach tourism. The cliffs overlooking the beach are composed of Tertiary sandstone and limestone, formed when ancient seas retreated—a geology shared across the entire Algarve coast. Today, local fishermen still use the small adjacent coves to moor their traditional boats, a reminder that Quarteira remains an active fishing port despite its tourism development.
