Located on the south shore of Lake Geneva, near Montreux in French-speaking Switzerland, Plage des Balises is part of a series of small public beaches that dot the Vaudois coastline. This stretch of shore, bordered by the Alps that plunge directly towards the lake's waters, benefits from a southeast exposure that makes it a natural anchor for local swimmers. Lake Geneva, with its 73 kilometers in length and temperate summer waters, creates a peaceful swimming environment here, far from the hustle and bustle of more touristy Alpine beaches. The beach consists of a strip of pebbles that gradually extends towards the open water, a common characteristic of the shores of Lake Geneva. At close distance, Plage CH (1.3 km) and Plage du Redon (1.7 km) offer similar alternatives, while Plage du Champ de l'Eau (2 km) marks a slight variation in the coastal profile. The site has the discreet charm of Swiss lake beaches: no fine sand, but natural intimacy, direct access without commercial promenades, and a local relaxation atmosphere. The smooth pebbles underfoot gradually give way to rocky bottoms typical of Lake Geneva. Access to Plage des Balises remains basic: no swimming supervision is provided, and tourist facilities are limited. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. No major infrastructure (parking, showers, restaurants) is reported on site. Visitors must therefore plan for their own provisions and respect the natural conditions of the lake, including seasonal temperature variations and occasional currents.
The name 'Balises' evokes the navigation markers that once dotted Lake Geneva, guiding small boats and fishermen through its sometimes capricious waters. This beach is part of the lakeside history of Montreux and its region, where public swimming gradually became democratized in the 20th century. Long frequented by Vaudois residents rather than passing tourists, it retains the character of a neighborhood beach, little publicized but regularly used on warm summer days. The pebbles of Lake Geneva, polished by millennia of glacial erosion, tell the geological story of the Alpine region.
