Plage du Puits

Located on the Algerian north coast, about 35 km west of Oran, Plage du Puits stretches along the Mediterranean coastline in a region where limestone cliffs gradually give way to sandy expanses. The shore, exposed to Atlantic swells coming up through the Strait of Gibraltar, has a wild character typical of this part of central Maghreb. In the immediate vicinity, Plage Sidi Boucif (1.9 km to the east) offers a contrast with its easier access, while Sidi Ali Beach (5.1 km to the west) marks the beginning of a succession of more isolated coves stretching westward. The site itself remains little developed, retaining the raw aspect of an open coastal beach where fine sand alternates with rocky areas. The absence of leisure facilities gives this stretch an atmosphere of authenticity, far from the standardized developments of coastal seaside resorts. Visitors discover a bay with generally calm waters in summer, framed by ochre and gray geological formations that bear witness to the region's former mining activity. The Mediterranean light is particularly intense in the late afternoon, revealing the nuances of the coastal rocks. No lifeguard service is provided on this beach, and access remains without formal tourist facilities. Visitors must come self-sufficient, with their own swimming equipment. The absence of a Blue Flag label reflects this lack of structured development. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed, as the natural terrain presents irregularities typical of unstable coastlines.

About this spot

The name "Puits" (Well) evokes the region's history: the freshwater wells that once dotted this arid coast long served as landmarks for sailors and caravanners. The local geology, dominated by Miocene limestones and marine deposits, has shaped a fragmented coastline where each beach represents a small natural cove. During the French colonial period, these beaches remained largely ignored by tourist circuits, reserved for local fishermen and smugglers who exploited the coast's isolation. Today, Plage du Puits retains this dimension of a transit point rather than a final destination, frequented by locals who know its secret access points and optimal swimming times.
