Bréhal stretches along the Norman coast of the Manche department, about 15 kilometers south of Coutances and 50 kilometers southwest of Saint-Lô. This section of the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay coastline exhibits the typical characteristics of western Normandy: a low coast, shaped by the amplitude of Atlantic tides, where sandy beaches alternate with rocky areas depending on local development. The shore is part of a relatively preserved coastal area, between the agricultural lands of the hinterland and the gray-green waters of the English Channel. Bréhal beach is distinguished by its direct access from the eponymous town, located immediately behind. In the immediate vicinity are other bathing access points: the beach of the same name at 1.6 kilometers and a series of small, undeveloped beaches at 1.9 and 4.3 kilometers. Further south, Donville Beach (6.9 kilometers) offers a more developed alternative. The site itself remains sparsely equipped, reflecting the rural and little-touristed character of this segment of the Norman coast. Visitors find a neighborhood beach atmosphere, without major facilities or overcrowding. No lifeguard supervision is provided on site. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. The Blue Flag status does not apply to this beach. The proximity of the town of Bréhal nevertheless allows practical access for local residents and visitors seeking unpretentious swimming.
Bréhal derives its name from the Breton 'Bré' (hill) and 'hal' (salt), recalling the ancient exploitation of salt marshes that characterized this coast before industrialization. The area, historically dominated by agriculture and coastal fishing, has retained a discreet profile compared to neighboring seaside resorts like Granville or Donville-les-Bains. The beach remains rooted in local daily life rather than mass tourism, making it an authentic swimming spot for the inhabitants of Manche.
