Filyos Plajı extends along the Black Sea coast, in the Pontus region of Turkey, near the mouth of the Filyos River. Located about 150 kilometers east of Ankara and accessible from the coastal roads of Kastamonu province, this beach borders a coastline characterized by wooded cliffs and wetland areas where the fresh waters of the Filyos meet the salty waters of the Black Sea. The surrounding coastal landscape alternates between small rocky coves and sandy stretches, with sparse Mediterranean vegetation descending to the shoreline. The beach itself occupies an intermediate position in a cluster of small coastal shores, 1.1 kilometers from two other similar beaches and 3 kilometers from a third. Unlike the developed seaside resorts of the Turkish Aegean coast, Filyos Plajı retains a pronounced rural character, where visitors primarily encounter local fishermen and families from inland villages. Access is via winding dirt tracks, and the shore remains unstructured: absence of major commercial infrastructure and massive seasonal crowds. The site has neither lifeguard supervision nor standard beach facilities (toilets, showers, designated parking). The absence of the Blue Flag label reflects this non-touristic vocation. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not provided. Swimming conditions depend entirely on the river cycles and Black Sea tides, and the proximity of the Filyos estuary creates variable currents depending on the seasons.
The name Filyos derives from the ancient Greek Halys, a legendary river that once marked the border between the kingdoms of Pontus and Paphlagonia. This estuary has long been a strategic crossroads for ancient and medieval Black Sea trade. Today, the Filyos delta is a fragile ecological zone, a refuge for numerous migratory bird species. Local fishermen, whose families have exploited these waters for generations, maintain seine fishing traditions here that have remained largely unchanged since the early 20th century. The beach itself remains little documented in Western tourist guides, which preserves its authentically rural character.
