Playa Curú stretches along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the Nicoya Peninsula, about 15 kilometers south of Montezuma. This stretch of coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and beaches, bordered by dense tropical forest that descends to the sand. The Pacific Ocean here has variable conditions depending on the season, with more pronounced waves during the period from May to November. The beach itself offers direct access to the water without visible tourist facilities. Compared to Playa Quesera, 2.4 kilometers to the north, Curú remains more discreet and less frequented. The other surrounding beaches, spread between 2.9 and 3.2 kilometers, form a cluster of small anchorages where coastal vegetation takes precedence over development. The site has no toilets, showers, designated parking, or lifeguard supervision. No environmental quality label certifies the waters. Access is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. This portion of the Nicoya coastline remains underdeveloped, reflecting the still-preserved character of the peninsula before its gradual urbanization. Visitors generally arrive on foot from the region's trails or by sea. Swimming depends entirely on the natural conditions of the day and prior knowledge of local currents.
Curú derives its name from the Guanacastecan term for a variety of palm endemic to the Pacific coasts of Costa Rica. The Nicoya Peninsula, formed by volcanic deposits and marine sediments accumulated over millions of years, is one of the geologically oldest areas of Costa Rica. From the 1980s onwards, this region attracted pioneers of alternative tourism fleeing the beaten path, establishing in Montezuma a model of bohemian development that persists. Playa Curú, remaining on the fringes of this dynamic, retains the anonymity of forgotten beaches—an asset for travelers seeking authentic coastal isolation.
