Little Ireland Beach

Little Ireland Beach extends along the coast of the American Pacific Northwest, in Washington State, about 100 kilometers southwest of Seattle. This portion of the Puget Sound coastline is characterized by a succession of rocky coves and pebble beaches, framed by coniferous forest descending to the high tide line. The area remains largely free of urban development, dominated by geological formations dating from the last glaciation and rock outcrops emerging from the water. The beach itself has a mixed composition of sand and pebbles, typical of Pacific Northwest shores. Its direct exposure to offshore swells gives it a wilder character than the protected bays in the immediate vicinity. The site remains undeveloped: no major tourist infrastructure is present, and access is mainly on foot from adjacent forest roads. The shore gradually rises towards the wooded hinterland, offering a clear transition between the marine ecosystem and the temperate forest. The site has neither lifeguard supervision nor Blue Flag status. No reception facilities—designated parking, toilets, showers, or catering—are listed on site. The absence of specialized facilities and the lack of accessibility for people with reduced mobility characterize this coastline, which remains in its natural state.

About this spot

The name "Little Ireland" reflects the demographic heritage of the American Pacific Northwest, a region that hosted significant waves of Irish immigration in the 19th century, particularly during the gold rush and the development of the forestry and mining industries. These Irish communities settled in the coastal areas and river valleys of Washington and Oregon, leaving their mark on local toponymy. The rocky coastline of this region, shaped by the Pleistocene glacial cycles, offers spectacular geological formations that early Irish settlers would have recognized as reminiscent of the North Atlantic coasts.
