Spiaggia delle Acque Calde extends along the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, in the Messina region, about 40 kilometers southwest of the city. This portion of the coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and fine sandy beaches, framed by basalt rock formations typical of this volcanic area. The Tyrrhenian Sea, here a deep blue, borders a shore where sandy areas and black stone outcrops alternate, a geological heritage of the region's ancient volcanic activity. Backed by remarkable geological formations, this beach is distinguished by its more intimate character than its immediate neighbors. 300 meters away is Plage IT-S, while Spiaggia delle Sabbie nere, famous for its dark volcanic sand, is only 400 meters away. Unlike the latter, often more frequented, this stretch of shore retains a quieter atmosphere, with less formalized access. The fine, light sand contrasts with the black basalt of the adjacent rocky areas, creating a landscape where the heat of the Mediterranean sun is intensely reflected on the volcanic minerals. Access to this beach remains rudimentary: no surveillance service is provided, and standard tourist facilities are absent. The absence of the Blue Flag label reflects this wilder vocation. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed, given the natural topography of the site and the lack of specific amenities.
The name "Acque Calde" (hot waters) evokes the underground thermal springs that surface in places along this coastal area, a phenomenon linked to the active geothermal activity of eastern Sicily. This region, dominated by Etna nearby, remains marked by its volcanic past: the black beaches and hot minerals that pierce the sand bear witness to it. Local fishermen have known these thermal anomalies for generations, which slightly modify the water temperature in certain areas, especially in winter. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, a few adventurous bathers came to seek these natural warm spots, gradually transforming the place into a destination of geological curiosity as well as a bathing spot.
