Plage Château Vert

Located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, about 15 kilometers east of Algiers, Château Vert Beach is part of a densely dotted coastal area with small coves and urban beaches. This stretch of the North Algerian shore benefits from direct exposure to the Mediterranean, with its temperate waters and marked seasonal variations. The surrounding coastline alternates between sandy and rocky areas, characteristic of this coast where seaside developments coexist with more natural spaces. The beach itself stretches modestly, bordered by Market Beach 500 meters to the west and Military Beach 1 900 meters to the east, forming a string of accessible bathing spots. Unlike its immediate neighbors, Château Vert retains a less frequented character than the central urban beaches, offering a quieter atmosphere despite its proximity to the Algiers agglomeration. The shore has the typical appearance of Algiers Mediterranean beaches: a strip of fine sand gradually sloping towards generally clear water, with rocky bottoms visible at shallow depths. Access to the beach remains basic, without standardized tourist facilities. No official supervision is provided, and accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. Swimming is therefore under the individual responsibility of visitors, respecting local weather conditions and currents. The site does not benefit from the Blue Flag certification.

About this spot

The name "Château Vert" (Green Castle) probably evokes an old coastal fortification or a vanished architectural landmark, common in Algiers toponymy where colonial and Ottoman vestiges have long marked the coastline. This beach is part of Algiers' seaside memory, an area where bathing remains a deeply rooted social practice despite the urban transformations of the 20th century. During the 1960s-1980s, these small beaches on the outskirts of Algiers served as refuges for families fleeing the crowds of the central areas, before progressive urbanization redrew access to the Mediterranean coast.
